Why you should be taking engagement photos | Wedding tips from a Michigan engagement session photographer

March 9, 2022

With years of wedding photography experience between us, we believe the most important tool we have before your wedding day is an engagement session!

So why should you have an engagement session? Simply put we want to get to know you. We want to see how the two of you interact and make sure we’re creating moments where you and your partner both feel comfortable.

Also giving you amazing photos will help reinforce you choosing us as your wedding photographers. Really, we want to ensure you have the best possible experience from start to finish.

Michigan Engagement Session planning- The first step in engagement session planning is choosing a location.

Whether you’re looking for a city vibe or something more natural we are happy to help you plan the perfect engagement session location.

Some places we love for engagement sessions are Downtown Detroit. For city sessions, I love to see a mix of chic evening attire (think suit jackets and long dresses) and more urban attire (jeans and trendy tops).

When I shoot in the city I strive to document the architecture and surroundings as well as the couple and their love for each other.

If you’re not a fan of the city let’s think of some more nature-based options, I adore a good set of tall towering trees or a beach where you can roll in the sand or get in the water.

For sessions like this, I suggest you bring the right shoes for the train and bring a change for when we start shooting. If you’re planning to get wet or dirty bring a change of clothes for after the session. For beach sessions, a long flowy dress looks amazing in the water!

I love the Silver Lake Sand dunes for a good beachy session and the UP is filled with great places to hike for more nature-based sessions. Places like The Porcupine Mountains or Pictured Rocks in Munising make for stunning engagement session locations too!

If you’re not up a full-on adventure session to the UP don’t worry, I know plenty of local locations that we can create stunning images at. Just reach out with your ideas and we’ll help you plan the perfect Michigan engagement session!

What to wear for your Michigan engagement session? – Choosing your engagement session outfit can be hard, we’re here to help!

Most people have only ever had one or two professional photoshoots in their whole life before their wedding. It can be overwhelming and downright stressful. One of the biggest stressors I hear is couples having no idea what to wear.

I often advise you to wear what you’re comfortable in; By that, I don’t mean show up in sweats and sneakers (I mean there could be a time and place for that I doubt this is it). If you don’t usually rock a sport coat when you go out to a nice dinner don’t do that for your session. Ladies, if you feel uncomfortable in a dress don’t wear one for your session.

Your engagement session isn’t the best time to try a new trend you’re unsure of. I want you to feel 1000% sure if your self so when you look back at your photos you see just how amazing you looked and felt.

When choosing engagement session outfits try to steer clear of being matchy-matchy, think coordinating but not matching.

For fall, I love jewel tones (mustard yellow, deep rust orange, plum purples, and teals). For summer, lighter colors with dark contrast are where it’s at. Jeans are great for any season and layering is a great way to maximize your session without having to take time for a full outfit change.

Allow your location to help with outfit choices. As I noted above in the location suggestions city locations look ahhmazing with more upscale evening outfits (long evening gowns and jackets) or something more urban and trendy. Beach sessions are fab with long summer dresses and short-sleeve button-downs.
