Cushing Field House Wedding Guide
Cushing Field House Wedding Guide | Planning a Timeless Wedding in Holly, Michigan

There’s something about Cushing Field House that feels intentional from the moment you arrive. Tucked away on 18 acres in Holly, Michigan, the property manages to feel both expansive and deeply private—offering a wedding day that feels elevated while still staying connected to nature.
As a photographer, I’m always drawn to the way this venue blends modern elegance with natural, warm textures. From the soft light in the White Oak Forest to the reclaimed wood inside the Field House, it’s a setting that allows your wedding day to feel relaxed and effortlessly beautiful. This guide is designed to help you navigate the property and plan a day that feels relaxed, intentional, and genuinely personal.
The Atmosphere of the Property
One of the things I love most about Cushing Field House is how naturally the spaces flow together. It doesn’t rely on trends; instead, it uses stone, wood, and floor-to-ceiling glass to create a backdrop that feels timeless. Whether you’re planning an intimate day or a larger celebration for up to 200 guests, the layout allows each part of the wedding to feel like its own distinct moment.

Venue Logistics & Planning
Location and Access
Located at 14151 Fish Lake Rd, Holly, MI 48442, the venue offers a peaceful, countryside atmosphere while remaining convenient for guests traveling from Metro Detroit or surrounding Southeast Michigan.
Investment & Requirements
The venue requires a 100-guest minimum for most weekends and a professional day-of coordinator. Having a coordinator is one of the biggest keys to a seamless day—it ensures you can stay present with your guests while we focus on capturing the moments as they happen.
Rental packages typically include access to the entire property, giving you the flexibility to choose between multiple indoor and outdoor ceremony sites. They also offer add-ons like lawn games and custom serving platters.

Selecting Your Ceremony Space
The property offers five distinct ceremony locations, each with its own character and light:
- White Oak Forest: A secluded, wooded spot with beautiful filtered light—it’s a favorite for staying cool during those warmer summer afternoons.
- The Sutton House: A sophisticated indoor space with a wood-burning fireplace. It’s a stunning “Plan B” that still feels connected to the outdoors thanks to the large glass doors.
- The Outdoor Lawn: A manicured space with wide-open views, perfect for couples who want that classic Michigan sky as their backdrop.
- Brick Paver & Meadow Sites: These offer a mix of garden surroundings and peaceful views of the countryside.
The Photographer’s Perspective: Light and Timing
Managing the Sunset
Because the property is bordered by a mature tree line, the “golden hour” light tends to disappear about 20 to 30 minutes earlier than the official sunset time.
For those soft, romantic portraits, I usually recommend stepping away about an hour before sunset. This lets us take advantage of the best evening glow before the sun dips behind the pines.

Seasonal Considerations
Cushing Field House photographs beautifully year-round. Spring and summer offer lush landscaping, while the fall color in the woods is incredible. Even in winter, the warm textures and the glow of the fireplace create an atmosphere that feels cozy and elevated.

Tips for a Seamless Wedding Day
- The First Look: Since the property is so large, a first look is a great way to explore the woods and the meadow before guests arrive. This often creates a more relaxed pace for the rest of the day.
- Rainy Day Peace of Mind: The architecture here is incredibly photographer-friendly. The covered spaces and indoor natural light mean we can still capture beautiful portraits even if the weather is unpredictable.
- The 11:00 PM Wrap: With an 11:00 PM music cutoff, the night usually ends with a high-energy reception, followed by a quiet private dance or a grand exit under the Edison lights.

Frequently Asked Questions About Weddings at Cushing Field House
WHEN IS THE BEST TIME OF YEAR TO GET MARRIED AT CUSHING FIELD HOUSE?
Cushing Field House is beautiful throughout every season, but late spring through fall tends to showcase the property especially well with the surrounding trees, open meadow spaces, and outdoor ceremony locations. Fall weddings here are particularly stunning once the leaves begin changing throughout the property.
Is Cushing Field House a good venue for sunset portraits?
Absolutely. One of the things I love most about Cushing Field House is how many beautiful portrait locations are available throughout the property. The open fields and wooded areas create gorgeous light for sunset photos, though I typically recommend planning portraits slightly earlier than official sunset since the tree line causes the light to disappear a bit sooner.
SHOULD WE DO A FIRST LOOK AT CUSHING FIELD HOUSE?
For most couples, I highly recommend it. A first look allows much more flexibility throughout the timeline and usually creates a more relaxed experience overall. It also allows couples to enjoy more of cocktail hour with their guests while still having plenty of time for portraits throughout the property.
HOW MUCH TIME SHOULD WE LEAVE FOR PORTRAITS AT CUSHING FIELD HOUSE?
Because the property offers several beautiful photo locations, I typically recommend leaving at least 45 minutes to an hour for couples portraits and wedding party photos if possible. This helps the experience feel much more relaxed and allows enough time to move through multiple areas of the venue without feeling rushed.
DOES CUSHING FIELD HOUSE HAVE GOOD RAIN BACKUP OPTIONS?
Yes. One of the things couples love about Cushing Field House is that the venue still photographs beautifully even if the weather shifts throughout the day. The indoor spaces feature gorgeous natural light, warm textures, and timeless architectural details that work beautifully for ceremonies and portraits alike.
WHAT IS THE BEST CEREMONY LOCATION AT CUSHING FIELD HOUSE?
That really depends on the overall feel you want for your wedding day. The White Oak Forest offers a more secluded, romantic atmosphere surrounded by trees, while the lawn and meadow spaces feel more open and expansive. Each ceremony location brings a slightly different experience and visual feel to the day.
WHERE SHOULD COUPLES GET READY FOR A CUSHING FIELD HOUSE WEDDING?
Many couples choose to get ready onsite to keep the day feeling seamless and relaxed, though there are also several nearby hotels and Airbnb options throughout Holly, Clarkston, and surrounding areas, depending on the overall aesthetic and experience you’re looking for.
